Aksel Sandemose blev født d. 19. marts 1899 i Nykøbing Mors og var næstyngst i en arbejderfamilies børneflok på otte. Hans mor, Amalie Sandemose, var norsk, mens faren, smed Jørgen Nielsen, var dansk. Forældrene døbte ham Axel Nielsen, som han – for at understrege sit norske ophav – i 1921 ændrede til Aksel Sandemose.

He was a writer, known for Klabautermannen (1969), Tjærehandleren (1971) and Misery Harbour (1999). He was married to Hanne Holbek, Eva Borgen and Dagmar Ditlevsen. He died on August 5, 1965 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Sandemose is very critical to the law of Jante, and the book is understood as satire.

I boken En flykting korsar sitt spår ( En flyktning krysser sitt spor , 1933) introducerade han begreppet Jantelagen . År 1963 nominerades han till Nobelpriset i litteratur . He changed his surname to Sandemose in 1921. Sandemose boarded a schooner for Norway at the age of seventeen. He was a sailor and lumberjack in Newfoundland.
