Mesozoic means "middle life", deriving from the Greek prefix meso-/μεσο-for "between" and zōon/ζῷον meaning "animal" or "living being". The name "Mesozoic" was proposed in 1840 by the British geologist John Phillips (1800–1874).

Mesozoic Geology Rocks of Mesozoic age in Minnesota tell the story of two major marine trangressions (or sea level rises): one during the Jurassic Period (roughly 200 million years ago) and one during the Cretaceous Period (roughly 100 million years ago). Mesozoic Era, second of Earth ’s three major geologic eras of Phanerozoic time. Its name is derived from the Greek term for “middle life.” The Mesozoic Era began 252.2 million years ago, following the conclusion of the Paleozoic Era, and ended 66 million years ago, at the dawn of the Cenozoic Era. (See the geologic time scale.) The Mesozoic era was originally described as the "secondary" era, following the primary or Paleozoic, and preceding the Tertiary.

They resulted from the collision of the African and Laurasian plates during Mesozoic and Tertiary times. The high standard of knowledge attained over the last 30 years by the working groups on "Alpine Metamorphism" is well known and helped considerably to recognize pre-Mesozoic elements in the Alps.
Mesozoic Era Geology and Tectonics. As this Era was bounded by two of the largest and most significant mass extinctions, the 200 million years of main Mesozoic time span was characterized by a lot of dynamic activities in relation to geological and tectonic upheavals. This volume provides an interdisciplinary summary of current research on the history and evolution of the Mesozoic Pacific Ocean. The importance of the work lies in not only describing the early history of the largest modern tectonic plate, but also in studying the geologic record and possible causes of the Cretaceous Greenhouse.
